Laura

When I start this 60-mile walk in November, it will be just over 12 years since I heard the dreaded words, “you have cancer.” While I knew that breast cancer was in my family history, ovarian cancer wasn’t on my radar. Unfortunately, that was my diagnosis. However, with the love and support of family, friends, and doctors, I am one of the lucky ones–A SURVIVOR! I now know that I have the BRCA1 gene that increases a woman’s risk of developing breast and/or ovarian cancer. I am doing all I can to fight this disease. Last year, I had an preventative double mastectomy to significantly decrease my breast cancer risk. Now, I am working on shedding the weight I gained while utilizing some serious emotional eating after my cancer diagnosis. Training for this walk is a part of my plan to become as healthy as I can to keep the cancer away.

I will not be walking this alone. I am a member of an awesome team, the “Bazooka Bettys” with my sister (Major Melons) and two cousins (Private Perkies and Captain Cleavage). While we all have our own individual stories on how cancer has affected our lives, the stories are all intertwined in the roots of family. I can only imagine how powerful it will be to share this experience with them.

Please support me as I take an amazing journey in the fight to end breast cancer! The Susan G. Komen 3-Day® is a 60-mile walk over the course of three days. I will be walking in San Diego on November 21—23, 2014. Net proceeds help support research, scientific programs and community-based breast health and education programs for women and men facing breast cancer. Thank You!
