About the Bettys

Young Bazooka Bettys

{Rachel} I took this photo out behind our family church in Elgin, Illinois in 1996. The whole family was gathered for my grandparents’ 50th wedding anniversary. It was a great day of celebration, reconnecting, and love for an amazing couple.

I’m not sure why we took this break out back. Or why Linda, Emily, and Laura were pushing up (or protecting, Laura) their bazookas. But it’s been one of my favorites since that day. Little did I know, that photo foreshadowed the role our breasts (and ovaries) would play in our lives. Our family has the BRCA-1 gene mutation. We have strong survivors and even stronger previvors in our midst and a beloved mother, daughter, sister, and aunt who passed away much too soon.

In the years since diagnoses, treatments, and genetic discoveries, we’ve raised (and given) thousands of dollars for breast cancer care, treatment, and research. We’ve walked, run, baked thousands of cakes, judged men in bras, and more. This year, we’ve created the Bazooka Bettys team for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. We’ll be walking 60 miles in three days this November in San Diego. We’ll be posting photos, updates, and fundraising fun here and on our various social media pages.
